Summer Design Technology Project May 2026
Year 6 have been applying their many Design Technology skills to our recent project - to design and make an Anderson Shelter.
As part of our History topic on the impact of the first and second world wars, the children have learned about what people had to do to protect themselves during the war.
We talked about what Anderson shelters looked like and the job they fulfilled.
The children used measuring, marking, cutting, joining and combining skills to construct their own Anderson shelter.
The children accurately measured their materials in order to create a stable structure
Using tools, such as saws, safely, Year 6 cut the wood independently
Once they had cut all the required lengths, the children could place them together to ensure they would join to form a strong structure
Combining with wood glue, the children worked together to securely fix their pieces together
Next, Year 6 needed to consider how to further strengthen their structure. They measured and cut our triangles to reinforce the corners
Now, they could combine all their parts together to create their frame
Applying previous scientific knowledge of circuits, the children added a battery clip and LED light to their frame
The children thought out Anderson Shelters and where they would be placed in the garden. They considered the need for camouflage so they might blend it.
Adding further design ideas to their final product, the children added their own unique touches
