October 2024
Year 2 have had a fantastic start to the Autumn term.
We have been enjoying our art unit of work, learning all about portraits. We had lots of fun looking at features of our face and cutting up photographs of ourselves to put the features in different places. We were amazed that you could still identify who the person in the picture was! Can you work the artists behind these self-portraits?
We also have looked at symmetry in our faces and created a self portrait:
Then we spent some time looking at portraits created by different artists. We particularly liked Paul Klee and created our own portraits based on his artwork. We are currently in the process of making these portraits using mixed media.
In English we have read the book 'Wombat goes Walkabout' by Michael Morpurgo. The children had lots of fun creating their own stories about Wombat, making sure they used lots of interesting descriptions and repetition, just like in the origional text. Here is an example of one of our stories:
March 2024
On Friday 9th February, Year 2 went on a trip to Boltons Park Farm.
The children got to find out about the cows that they have on the farm and even had a go at milking a model cow! The cows were very friendly, and we learnt lots of interesting facts about them. We even got to meet some of the baby calves.
We got to see sheep at the farm. Most of them were pregnant and were due to give birth to lambs that weekend. We learnt that sheep also have udders like cows to feed their young milk and that you can tell the age of a sheep by looking at its teeth.
Lots of us really enjoyed meeting the chickens. We were able to hold them and search for their eggs.
The vets on the farm talked to us about how the animals are looked after. We got to look at some animal x-rays and bones and we were taught how to bandage some toy animals.
We had a great day and would like to thank the farm for an amazing trip and the parents who helped us on the day.
December 2023
The children have settled well into Year 2 and we have been very busy this term. Here are some of the things we have done:
In Science we have been learning about what animals need to survive. We had lots of fun preparing bird feeders – they were very sticky and messy to make! We sequenced and wrote the instructions as part of English work.
We have been learning how humans should keep healthy. We had an interesting online visit from 'Dentist Dan', who showed us around his dental surgery and told us why it is important to look after our teeth. We have also been doing lots of fun investigations about the impact of exercise on our bodies and how easily germs spread - we did this using glitter and it spread everywhere!
In Art, we have been drawing self-portraits. Firstly, we cut up photographs of ourselves to put our facial features in the wrong places:
Then we learnt that our faces have a vertical line of symmetry:
We researched the artist Paul Klee looked at some of his artwork. As part of our DT unit of work, we made fabric faces based on a picture called ‘Senecio’. We used templates to cut out our facial features and used different ways to fasten the fabric together.
In Computing, we have been learning how to take and edit pictures. We had lots of fun editing pictures with our friends:
In PSHE, we have been learning about building positive friendships. We really enjoyed creating friendships flowers for each other. Every flower has compliments on the petals about our classmates.
We thought about ways we can help our friends and make out classroom a happy place to be. In English we wrote a set of instructions for creating a happy classroom:
We have also enjoyed getting ready for our Christmas show called ‘Christmas with the Aliens’. The children worked hard to learn their lines and they sang all the songs beautifully. Here are some pictures of us performing our show to the school:
World Book Day
Year 2s busy time has continued. Today we celebrated World Book Day. Lots of us dressed up in costumes and we all brought a favourite book to school to share with our friends. We had lots of favourites including two 'Daisy' books, 2 'Wimpy Kids' books, and a book about a greedy shark who got tricked by a squid. Perhaps the funniest sounding book was 'I need a new bum'!
In the afternoon we did a science investigation testing the strength of different magnets to help with a puppet show based on the lovely story 'The three billy goats Gruff' and finally we chose a story to listen to read to us by different teachers.
