Science
This term in Science, we have been learning all about our five senses — taste, hearing, touch, smell, and sight. We took part in lots of fun experiments to test our senses and to discover how much we rely on them in our everyday lives. A class favourite was definitely the tasting experiment! We tried sweet, sour, salty, and bitter foods — and to everyone’s surprise, the class loved the taste of bitter dark chocolate the most!
Through our investigations, we learned how each of our senses helps us to explore and understand the world around us.

Design and Technology
In Design and Technology this half term we set out to develop over very own moving mechanisms. As part of this project, we were able to create our own sliders and levers. In order to complete this task, the children had to begin to draw on their own experience to help generate ideas and research conducted on criteria. Begin to understand the development of existing products: What they are for, how they work, materials used. Start to suggest ideas and explain what they are going to do and understand how to identify a target group for what they intend to design and make based on a design criteria.

Maths
This half term in maths, we have been learning all about place value and beginning to explore addition and subtraction. Using part-part-whole models, we discovered how two parts can be added together to make a whole. We have enjoyed using practical resources like counters, cubes and number cards to help us understand how numbers fit together.

Fruit Kebabs
During our Design and Technology curriculum, Year 1 pupils took part in a hands-on lesson focused on preparing healthy foods. The children designed and made their own fruit kebabs, carefully selecting a variety of fruits to create colourful and nutritious combinations. This activity not only supported their understanding of healthy eating, but also helped develop important skills such as cutting safely, following instructions, and evaluating their designs. It was a creative and enjoyable session that reinforced key learning through practical experience.

A Trip To Hertfordshire Zoo!
As part of our exciting Geography topic on animal habitats, Year 1 had the fantastic opportunity to visit Hertfordshire Zoo! The children were thrilled to see a variety of animals up close, including an Asian red panda, playful meerkats, and majestic leopards. We also had some fascinating discussions about the lions and penguins, learning how their homes at the zoo are designed to match their natural habitats. It was a day full of wonder, discovery, and unforgettable wildlife encounters!
