Year 1 have had a busy half-term these past few weeks filled with learning and festive fun!
Lights, Camel, Action Christmas Show
Years 1 and 2 worked incredibly hard this term to prepare for our amazing Christmas show, 'Lights, Camel, Action'! We had so much fun performing it for everyone at school as well as our families.
On December 6th, we had the exciting opportunity to attend the winter fair! We visited the enchanting owl house, met Father Christmas and his elves, and received delightful gifts. We even had a chance to watch the cheeky elves wrap up one of our classmates which was very funny! Afterwards, we enjoyed a variety of exciting games at different stalls. It was a truly memorable and a fun-filled day!
This term in history, we embarked on an exploration of the similarities and differences between our own lives and those of our grandparents' generation. This unit delved into a variety of topics, including housing, toys, shopping, and schooling experiences. We had the unique opportunity to examine and handle authentic artefacts from past homes. While investigating the history of education, we stepped into a recreated historical classroom! The desks were arranged in rows facing the front, and we experienced the challenge of writing with chalk on black paper.
October 2024 - Dress up day
Year 1 have had a wonderful start to the academic year!
On October 11th, Year 1 embarked on an exciting geography walk around our local area. We walked down The Walk, into Parkfield Park, past the pond, and made our way up to the High Street before returning to school. Join us on this journey by looking at the images and don’t forget to keep an eye out for some interesting local features!
On October 16th, Year 1 visited Father Stephen at St. Mary’s Church. During our time there, he taught us all about Christenings and the various elements of the ceremony, which was fascinating! We even had the opportunity to explore the font and create some drawings. It was a wonderful experience!
During our science unit this term, Year 1 has been exploring the five senses of the human body: sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. In our lessons, we conducted various experiments to engage with each sense.
For sight, we entered a dark room with a torch to discover if we could see in complete darkness as well as testing if we can throw a ball into a box with both eyes, one eye and no sight at all. In our hearing activity, we went on a sound walk both indoors and outdoors, listening for interesting and unusual sounds.
For taste, we enjoyed sampling a variety of foods, including sweet chocolate cookies, sour lemons, bitter dark chocolate, and salty popcorn. To test our sense of smell, we guessed the contents of five different pots filled with various scents.
Finally, for touch, we explored the classroom to find objects and materials that were rough, smooth, soft, and hard. It has been a fun and informative experience!
