Welcome to Year 2
Aliens return to Ladbrooke...luckily they come in peace!
It seems that Ladbrooke has more than its fair share of alien invasions. One spaceship full of aliens visited in December for our Christmas show and now another bigger group has arrived at the beginning of January. While they were here, they took the opportunity to learn lots about human life. They took part in a singing assembly and they liked the singing so much that they stayed in the hall to dance their strange alien dances when the singing was over.
Some of them put on their invisibility cloak and crept silently around the school...taking great care not to disturb the large and rather scary humans in Year 6. The children of year 5 were kind enough to explain what their little pots of equipment were...wooden sticks called pencils and pens and rulers that the aliens thought were weapons.
Back in the Year 2 classroom the aliens learnt to write using human writing and then they even did some human multiplication. If one alien has 4 tentacles, how many tentacles will their be on 5 aliens?
The aliens were very confused at lunch time because they had chosen a red or green lunch. As one of them pointed out, none of the human food was actually red except for the ketchup.
After lunch the aliens drew pictures of their friends at home using oil pastels. You can see their lovely works of art at the end of the corridor on the way to the Key Stage 1 classrooms.
Now that the aliens have returned to their planet, all we have left is these pictures. See if you can recognise some familiar faces.
Dear Year 2 Children and Parents
I am hoping to put some English and maths work here for you each day for the period that the school is closed.
Please check regularly to see what is suggested.
Please remember that the SATs revision booklets produced by Twinkl are a particularly good place to go for work as they cover things that we have learnt and need to revise in Year 2. These activities are often explained in more detail than I will be able to put on this website. Twinkl are also providing a month's free login to their site during the school closure so you can download things directly from there.
If the work is too easy for your child, you could look at some activities for Year 3. If it is too challenging, then Year 1 activities might help. The main thing is to keep learning during these difficult times.
Thank you
Mrs Trott
We want to tell the Universe the Good News...
Year 2 worked together with Year 1 to present our wonderful Christmas Show called Christmas with the aliens. In our show some aliens crashed on. They met some human chidren and when they had both got over their surprise, the children invited the aliens to visit their school. At school the children were practising their nativity play and so the aliens learnt the good news about the birth of Jesus. They eventually fixed their spaceship and took of to tell the whole universe about the birth of baby Jesus.
Here are some photographs of us all in action.
Our first topic of the year was called 'Marvellous Me' and gave us opportunities to learn lots more about ourselves, especially our brilliant bodies.
We now know the names of lots of the bones that are in our bodies and we made moving skeletons to show how our joints work. Can you imagine how difficult life would be if you didn't have joints that let you bend in so many different ways?
We carried out some research into our bodies and used the mind mapping app 'Simple Mind' on the ipads to record our notes.
Take a look at some pictures of us in action.
Year 2 at Whipsnade Zoo - July
Here are some extracts from the recounts that the children wrote about the trip.
Yesterday we went to an exciting zoo called Whipsnade. It was great. First we went on a big white coach. My partner and me sat on the top. It was very scarey and very exciting. My partner was called Krish. He's a very nice boy.
Then we got off the coach and we were waiting in the line and finally we were in the zool
Oliver
When I got off the coach I went to see the chimpanzees. On the way I saw the lemurs. Then we headed to the giraffes. It was quite a long walk. On the way I saw some lazy bisons.
Daisy
First we saw lemurs. Lemurs are good climbers because their tails are so long so they can be the best climbers.
Omer
When we got there we were so excited to see the lemurs. Oh, yes, and we also saw lazy chimpanzees. After that we saw very tall giraffes and the giraffes had the stinkiest enclosure out of all the animals in the whole, entire zoo.
Dede
I also saw a tiger. It was hiding so we tried to look for it but we couldn't find it. When we went on, Mrs Mankodi's group found the tiger. We all gor really excited and saw the tiger.
After that, we had some fruit for a snack because we were waiting for our turn at the workshop. But then another school thought it was their turn and took our workshop so we decided we would have lunch there.
Jessica
We went to the tigers. I saw a picture on the wall. Mrs Trott told me not to bang on it in case the tigers were in there so I ran.
Hollie
The sealions were my second favourite. Oh yes! The California Sea lion because it looked funny. I wanted to see it swim but we were looking inside and it was probably outside. We had a look outside but it was probably having lunch.
Sophie
After we went to the butterfly house and one of the big, blue butterflies landed on me.
Zofia
We looked at the elephants and one of them was getting lots of hugs.
Nevaeh
We went to see the elephants and thre was a baby elephant. After we saw the rhinos and they were covered in mud. And then we went back to the school.
Frankie
Then I went to the butterfly house. One of the butterflies came on my head. I saw lots of butterflies in there. Loads.
It was a really fun day.
