Maths- For today's maths you will have 3 challenges of addition and subtraction. Please choose which worksheet you would like to complete. You can do all 3 worksheets if you want!!
English- There is a lovely BBC programme from Christmas day of Julia Donaldson and how she wrote The Gruffalo. We thought it would great to watch, so the children can understand a little bit more about the story and the author. We will follow up with some more work on this tomorrow.
R.E.- This terms R.E. topic is all about what prayer, worship and reflection mean to a religious community. We will also try to learn what it means to be still and calm.
This week we will be watching a video clip about how Muslims pray, and designing a prayer mat. Twelve-year-old Kaisan demonstrates the Muslim prayer ritual which is performed five times a day in this clip from a series exploring young people and faith.
Maths- For maths today you are having a rest from the videos and will need to put your maths skills to work! You need to answer a set of addition and subtraction questions and break the code to find the planets.
English: This week we will be looking at the book “The Gruffalo’s Child’. Since Mrs Radmall is still in the woods looking for the Gruffalo I decided to put all my layers on and go into the snow storm and look for the Gruffalo’s child!. Hope you enjoy the story!
Story video:
/aa1be801d2"> For your English lesson today you are going to write instructions on how to make a Gruffalo mask. You can even make 2 masks, one of the Gruffalo and another of the Gruffalo’s child.
Topic: Since you have spent so long writing instructions for your Gruffalo mask now you can see if your instructions are detailed enough for you to make your own Gruffalo mask. Follow your instructions and make your own Gruffalo mask. I would love to see pictures of the masks you have made!!
Maths- Today you will adding ones using number bonds. You can make this lesson a little bit more interactive by pausing the first part with the questions and timing the children to see how quickly they can answer the questions or find different creative ways of answering the questions.
E.g. Question: What is one more than 9. You can give them number cards and they can flash the number card. 6+_=10 the children can draw this using counters or even objects like pencils or marbles.
Topic- For topic this afternoon you are going to have your very own planetarium experience. Usually this topic we would either go on a school trip or have the experience come to us. The Royal Observatory has created a fun video clip of Teddy going on holiday to space.
Your experience will involve a dark room, or even a sheet to cover while you watch teddy learn facts about the different planets. So enjoy the experience!!
You can then write a sentence about what you enjoyed or tell me a fact about a planet.
Good Morning Year 1. Hope you all had a lovely weekend. Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you for completing the work we have been setting. You are all doing such an amazing job and it has been lovely to see the work, pictures and videos you have been sending.
Maths- For the next few weeks we will be focusing on addition and subtraction to 20. It is very important you are confident with adding and subtracting. Feel free to extend your learning further by using bigger numbers if you prefer.
Video lesson:
Worksheet:
Phonics lesson:
Starter - Recap on set 2 and 3 sounds with Miss Edgar and Mrs Wilkinson. There may be sounds you have not learnt yet which is why it is important to recap on the sounds every day.
/6ab0e57b4d">Set 1 sounds
/fb5d211c1b">Set 2 sounds
/a0d9922f22">Set 3 sounds
Choose a sound you would like to focus on. Think of 4 words with this sound and learn to spell them. If you would like to challenge yourself see how many sentences you can write using that sound.
E.g ‘ee’ see, bee, feed, keep I can see a blue bird flying in the sky.
Phonics Task - This is split into your three groups. Please find your group and complete the appropriate work.
Today for your phonics you can listen to the story from your phonics group. You can then play it again and pause after each page so you can have a go at reading the story yourself. After you have read the story you can answer the comprehension questions verbally. If you want to extend yourself you can ask an adult to help you and write the answers in sentences.
Topic- There is a lovely video clip of Julia Donaldson which would be nice to watch. We thought it would be a nice thing to watch so the children can understand a little bit more about the story and the author.
A Gruffalo hunt. Cut out each green box and ask someone to hide the pictures of the characters from The Gruffalo story around your home or outside if it's a nice day. When you have hunted for the animals you will notice that each character has a sentence with it. The sentences have mistakes and will need to be edited. You will need to add finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. Write the sentences correctly and make sure it makes sense. Draw your animal next to each sentence. To challenge yourself write some of your own sentences about each of the animals.
Maths: Addition and Subtraction – This is a recap of the addition and subtraction. Please remind the children to carefully look at the symbols and fully understand what they mean before beginning their activity.
Good Morning Year 1. Well done for completing the work so far, it is clear that you are all working very hard at home.
English: For our English today we will be looking at the book ‘The Gruffalo’. We will be completing activities based on ‘The Gruffalo’ the next few weeks. Mrs Radmall took a stroll in the deep dark wood to find the Gruffalo. While she was searching she decided to stop and have a little rest and read you a story! Enjoy!!!
Activity: Colour in the characters from book. You can put these pictures onto stick, straws or strips of cardboard to create stick puppets. You can then act out the story using your puppets. Try to remember the sequence of the story.
*To challenge yourself try to use different voices for the characters.
Good Morning Year 1! Thank you to everyone who completed and sent me their work yesterday. I know it is a bit tricky doing something new but you are all doing an amazing job already so keep up the good work! Here are the activities you will be doing today:
Maths: For maths you will be looking at ‘Greater than’, ‘Less than’ and ‘Equal to’. You will learn to identify the symbols and also use them in your work.
Phonics: Our phonics will be slightly different. You will need to find the group you are in and do the completed work for that group. You will have a book to read each week and you will need to complete comprehension questions based on this book. You can listen to the book being read. Then look at the book again with no audio and pause the pages so you can have a go at reading the book yourselves.
Topic: For topic we will be looking at planets. Listen to the song about the planets and complete the worksheet provided. If you want to extend your learning you can do a poster or a fact file of a planet of your choice.
Happy New Year from the year 1 team! Hope you all had a well-rested break and were staying safe. We are going to start our home learning this week. We will put up videos and worksheets for you to complete at home. The work we provide will be for you to complete independently with a bit of support if needed. Please email us if you have any questions or worries about the work provided.
Every day you will be set a Phonics/English activity, a maths activity and a topic activity to complete at home. Sometimes we will give you a little surprise with a nice story or fun art activity. Please complete the work as independently as you can and be proud of all the learning that you are doing. Always try the best you can and be proud of your work.
Maths- Counting objects: Let’s remind ourselves of how to count objects carefully. If you would like to extend yourself further, challenge yourself to count objects above 20.
If you have a printer at home, print off the worksheet to write on.
Phonics lesson: Recap on set 2 and 3 sounds with Miss Edgar and Mrs Wilkinson. There may be sounds you have not learnt yet which is why it is important to recap on the sounds every day.
Choose a sound you would like to focus on. Think of 4 words with this sound and learn to spell them. If you would like to challenge yourself see how many sentences you can write using that sound.
E.g ‘ee’ see, bee, feed, keep I can see a blue bird flying in the sky.
Topic: Our topic this term is 'Long ago, far away'. Complete a step by step space picture. you can either colour, paint or use crayons to make it stand out!
Hello Year 1. This morning you will be completing your work from home. You will need a nice quiet ares and a pencil for you to do your work. Looking forward to seeing your work when you are back at school on Friday.
English - This week we have been looking at the story of 'Jack and the Beantalk'. For our English lesson you will need to write sentences to describe a character from the story. Please make sure you remember to use:
Maths - This week we have been learning about money. We have been looking and sorting different coins and learning about the value of each coin. For your maths we would like you to search for different coins you may have in the house and see if your child can recognise their value. You can also price a few items and play shop to build up your child's confidence in adding coins together.
Topic - For our topic you can create a newspaper Christmas tree. If you do not celebrate Christmas you can use a similar method to create something different.
This is our final week of school and home learning. We just wanted to take this time to say how proud we are of each and every one of you. This has been a difficult year and you have all worked so hard and been so positive. Even though we have not had a full year with you it has been a pleasure teaching you.
We are looking forward to seeing you all at the picnic and hearing about how you have all been getting on. Have a great summer and make sure you come back in September ready to learn.
The activities we have included are to get you to reflect on the year you have had and think about starting September as year 2 children.
Hello year 1, hope you are all well and staying safe, fit and active. Mainly because it should have been our annual sports day last Friday, which is a special occasion that sadly like many other fun events had to be postponed this year. However, all is not lost as thanks to some amazing efforts from Miss Webster, Mr Ward, Mr Palmer and some sporty Year 6’s there will still be a Ladbrooke house sports cup competition this year!
The challenge has been laid to take part in a unique series of events known as the ‘Sock Olympics’. From the link below you will find an attachment with details of how to do your bit to help your house get their hands on the trophy!
Amongst some suggested fun challenges there are five sock Olympic events that we recommend maybe performing one for each day of the week and keeping a record of your scores.
Note: The children attending school will also be performing these events on a daily basis.
At the end of the week, email your scores to us and we will enter them into the class leader board which then along with all the other class results will decide who wins the house cup!
Will it be Chester, Lincoln or York? It’s going to be close, so make sure you pull your socks up, play fair and give your best efforts for your team, the game is on!
Doing regular exercise is an important part of looking after ourselves to keep our bodies active and healthy. So to is taking care of what we put inside us to give us the energy to do things. Eating a balanced diet as well as enjoying plenty of fruit and vegetables makes sure our bodies have what they need to help us always be at our physical best and grow up strong.
To fit in with health and fitness week our working story is all about vegetables. There are strange going ons at the supermarket at night and the other vegetables have noticed that those crafty, creeping carrots are up to something. Click on the link to hear Mr Smith read the tale of ‘Carrot Club’.
Hope you are all well and have been enjoying the lovely sunshine we have had so far! This week we will be looking at the book ‘The cautious caterpillar’. ClIck on the link below to see and hear Mrs Petrou read the story:
This is a lovely story and seems to be best suited to the situation the children have been faced with so far. Therefore may be a good idea to have some discussion based on this story. Below will be a few tasks you can complete with your child. Looking forward to seeing your work!
Good morning Year 1, we hope you are all staying well and have enjoyed the recent weekend sunshine. It was so lovely to see and hear about some of the wonderful work you produced last week when working on the activities from our chosen book that Mrs Petrou read ‘The Messy Magpie’.
Hopefully not only did you have fun completing the tasks, but also learned a bit more about recycling and how we can all do our part to keep our Earth clean, safe and healthy.
This week we shall be working on another book called ‘The Day The Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt.
Click on the link below to hear Mr Smith read you the story and then throughout the week there are activities to attempt related to the story. As ever we look forward to seeing what you can do.
To attempt the tasks you can re-watch and pause the video as needed to get further information about each crayon or if helps a list can be found here - Crayon's Problems
As well as some maths work about the crayons we are going to continue with work on our fractions. This week we are focusing on quarters ¼
A quarter is when you share objects, items or numbers by four making sure each quarter is an equal share of the original whole. Sometimes it can be explained by halving and then halving again.
For example, if the staff in Year 1 were given 8 pens by Miss Webster to share between the 4 adults in our class we would have to divide them up equally else it would not be fair. Sharing them in half between the teachers and the teachers assistants (TA’s) would mean the two teachers and two TA’s getting 4 each to then share between them. Then we would split both groups in half again sharing the 4 teacher’s pens and 4 TA’s pens giving 2 to each adult.
So overall Mrs Petrou would get 2, Mr Smith would be given 2, Miss Edgar would have 2 and Mrs Huntley would also receive 2 meaning we have shared the pens out equally by dividing them into quarters.
In these maths activities you will be helping Farmer Jake divide his farm animals into four equal sized fields and some quadruplets (4 children born at the same time) with their birthday celebrations.
Also there are some reasoning activity cards to work through (preferably adult assisted with the guidance prompts) to help you understand quarters further, good luck.
Hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine!
You have all been working so hard so we thought you could have a bit of a rest this week. Since our topic theme this term is ‘It's a Wonderful World’. We thought it would be a good idea to have a Recycling week as keeping our world clean and learning to recycle plays a big part in looking after our world wonderful.
We have provided a few resources below to give you ideas on what you could work through this week. You can choose to do some or all of the activities and/or you may even have some other ideas of your own which you could do that involve recycling.
We look forward to seeing the lovely work you complete.
To introduce the topic we have found a lovely story about a Messy Magpie.
Click on the link below to listen to the story and also see your teacher reading it.
Hope you are all well and had a good weekend. The weather has changed slightly but hopefully we can have the lovely sunshine back soon.
We have some exciting news for you!
This week we have recorded ourselves introducing a lesson so that you can all get to see us! We know it has been difficult and you are all missing school and your friends so hopefully this will give you a boost to keep working hard! We will put a link on the lessons so look out for words screencast-o-matic. This will not be for every lesson but hopefully once we get the hang of it we can try provide more lessons for you. Please be patient with us as the videos are not perfect and you may notice this is out of our comfort zone. Hopefully each video we do will get better!!
English. This week we will be looking at the book 'The Gruffalo's Child'. All the work for english will be based on this book: Click the link below to watch my video on adjectives:
Hope you all enjoyed the work set yesterday and my video on ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’. Today we will continue to look at ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ and will be completing worked based on the same story.
Good morning year 1 and a happy Wednesday to you all.
Today we will be continuing to look at the book ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ by Julia Donaldson. If you think you need a refresh of the story then you can re-hear the tale (Sadly not with Mrs Petrou reading it this time) by clicking this link.
Now you have a task to firstly draw a picture of the three main characters then try to come up with some words to describe what you like about each of them. Remember our uses of adjectives to help.
For example, you could say you like how purple the Gruffalo’s spikes are or how brave the Gruffalo’s child was during her scary adventures. We look forward to seeing what amazing descriptions of the creatures you can come up with.
For our numeracy work please follow the link below for a provided PowerPoint work through (You will get to hear Mr Smith’s voice today in this video). In this session we will be looking at finding half of a set of objects with the help of some sea loving swashbucklers called Pirate Jack and Pirate Jenny as we carry on with our work with fractions.
We all love to read books and one of the best things about it is then getting to share experiences of our favourite stories with others. For today’s activity you are to write about your best part of the story and draw a picture of it too.
Re-read/watch the tale of The Gruffalo’s Child by Julia Donaldson.
On the worksheet (or in your book if you cannot print the page) draw a picture to help you show your favourite part of the story and then think of some sentences to write about it. Remember to include capital letters, full stops and finger spaces as well as trying to use adjectives to help with your reasons.
For example you could write: My best part of the story was when the clever mouse tricked the young Gruffalo’s child into not eating him up for dinner.
Maths - In this session we will be continuing our work on fractions, but this time it shall involve something that we all look forward to…. lunch! Again you have a video read through by Mr Smith to introduce the task and our activity to complete.
Well done on going through the online lessons with a special thank you to Miss Harris at the Oak National Academy we have now visited all seven continents. Hopefully you have learned something new about them that you didn’t before, we certainly have. We are now going to look at some of the animals that live on planet Earth and share our wonderful world with us.
Watch the video about Fantastic Animals and then answer the questions provided below. You might recognise someone in the clip helping you find out some amazing facts about these incredible creatures.
Hope you have enjoyed all your English activities for the book 'The Gruffalo's Child'. We have only had a few children consistantly sending us work. Thank you to everyone who has been sending us work. It has been so lovely to see the children working hard. I know you are all very busy but it would be lovely to hear how children are getting on. Hope you have also enjoyed our videos this week as you can imagine it was a difficult task for us but it makes it all worth it if the children enjoy them.
For english today you will be continuing to do work from the story. Today you are going to think about the mouse. He has been very clever and has once again managed to trick a Gruffalo. Complete the worksheet provided below and tell us what you think was clever about his trick.
This week for maths you looked at finding half of a shape and an number. We have provided you with a worksheet to see what you have learnt so far and if you can complete the workshee using the skills you have learnt throughout the week.
Following on from the lovely powepoint Mr Smith provided for you, you can choose your favourite animal and complete an art lesson. There are lots of links on youtube where you can draw different animals with a step by step guide. Here are a few you can choose from:
Good Morning year 1. Hope you have enjoyed learning about the different countries so far. Just want to say thank you to everyone who have been sending us over the work they have been doing. It has been lovely to see you all working hard.
For English you will be creating a wanted poster from the story 'Little Red Riding Hood'. If you have this story at home please read it before. If not you can follow the link:
Hope you are all well and staying safe. You have all been working so hard the past few weeks and we have been so proud with all the work you have been showing us.
In school the week before May half term is always an art week and we see no reason for this to change this year. For one week only your children will focus solely on art. Please look at the document attached/below. The children can choose to focus on one challenge or if they are feeling very arty they may attempt them all. As it is half term next week and no work will be set during this week, they could spend two weeks on these projects.
The theme is Nature Around Us and the challenges are based on using things they may find on their walks around parks and in your gardens to create art. We hope you will have a lot of fun.
We would then love to have a gallery of the children's work displayed on the website. If you would like send a picture of your child holding their art work and tell us what they enjoyed most about this activity, you can email this to to me @ This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Follow the link below to get some ideas of what you can do. I am sure you will all come up with plenty more ideas. Looking forward to seeing your lovely work!
Hope you all had a lovely weekend and are staying safe. Thank you to everyone who has been sending us their work. It has been lovely to see you all working so hard and enjoying the activities. Keep up the good work.
Look at the daily overview links to see full details of the work provided.
A note from Mrs Trott in Y2 - it will be good for the children in Y1 to be able to read the time at 0'clock and half past the hour. It is also great if they know quarter past. Obviously if they can do more, then feel free, but we do a lot more on the quarter hours and 5 minute intervals in Y2.
Week 6 - Day 2
Good Morning Year 1!
Hope you are all well and staying safe. Here is the overview of today's lessons:
Phonics:
For your phonics lesson today you are going to play a game of ‘I spy’. Look at the worksheet provided. The children will look at the worksheet and write down what they can see.
There is a checklist worksheet as well, but do not let the children see this as we would like them to try and spell the words they can see themselves.
Once they have written down everything they can see they can use the checklist to see if they missed anything and also check their spelling. If there are a few words they found tricky you can try practice these and revisit every few days.
Complete the worksheet provided and write the clock times. There are different levels of challenge so choose the worksheet you feel your child will be more confident with and you can always complete more than one.
We usually focus on o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. If you think your child is able to do these times confidently then you can try teach them the digital times and be more specific. E.g. 3:15, 4:10.
Hope you are all well and have been working hard. Thank you for sending over your work it has been lovely to see children learning and having fun!
Phonics:
Today for phonics you will complete a reading comprehension. There are 3 different types of levels for this activity and answer sheets. Please choose the level you think is best for your child before starting. You might still need to support your child with the reading but see if they can have a go on their own.
The children will have to match the analogue clocks to the times provided.
You will need a few colouring pencils for this activity. If you do not have colouring pencils you can draw a small picture to show the clocks that match.
We are so pleased to hear that children are enjoying the daily fitness challenges and feel free to complete more of them at your own leisure. They are given to us from CSE (Mr Palmer’s organisation) so apologies if a couple of the link are incorrect or have been removed. A new list will be provided for next week too.
English (Comprehension):
Today for English you will have another reading comprehension challenge. This time the format is of a non fiction text (Newspaper report). You may be familiar with characters and events in the report and it is taken from still one of our favourite stories to read.
Note: You might still need to support your child with the reading yet see if they can have a go on their own first.
Well done on your amazing work with time so far this week Year 1. We are very impressed with the worksheets, pictures, emails and even videos we’ve seen of you hard at work and even helping your adults to tell the time too.
We are next going to look at a bit of mastery. This generally means that not only can we tell the time, but we can also answer questions and help solve problems using what we know about how it works and the rules for when reading or writing it.
Note for adults: There are two sets of questions that ideally should be performed with adult support (further guidance is provided on the worksheets). A tougher challenge involving half past values is available or just continue using to the hour (o’clock) if you feel they need more practice in this area first.
A few weeks back we began looking at the continents of the world by filling in our booklets with lots of important information and fabulous facts that you found out. We loved seeing the work and research that was send to us and some facts discovered were even things we didn’t know before either!
Today we will continue with our Wonderful World work. Re-watch the seven continents song and this time focus on the size and shape of the different continents as you watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35V2dm7JIwE
Now there is a continents cut and stick activity for you to carefully cut out and position the continents correctly on a blank world map. Once in place, colour them in and label with their correct names.
Hint: Some of the continents might overlap (i.e. a part of one might go on top or under another).
Note: If you do not have printing facilities you could trace/draw the outline of the continents in their correct place, accuracy need not be too specific.
Extension: Can you list/draw any animals that are native (live) on those continents? Look at your booklet to help.
Good luck and have a lovely day.
Week 6 - Day 5 - 15th May 2020
Good morning everyone!
English (Picture prompts):
You have worked so well in your phonics and English this week answering questions using a video we watched or the information you found out while reading different pieces of text. Today you will have a few questions (with a picture prompt) for you to decide what has happened or what will happen next. There are no real right or wrong responses so long as you relate your answer to the question. Knowing the amazing range of ideas and imagination we have across our class we are sure there will be some superb replies which we would then love to hear about.
There are four questions to answer from so choose 1, 2, 3 or all 4 to complete and wow us with your independent insights.
Ok it is time to put our hard work and practice on telling the time this week to the test. Below are links to a couple of online time related maths games.
This one will show you a clock face with a time and a number of possible answer choices. Be careful when reading the time, remembering which hand is which as the game will try to trick you with some crafty wrong answers shown in an attempt to fool you.
For this next game a clock face is shown and a time is given for the children to move the hands to the correct positions before clicking on check to see if they are right.
Note: Both games have options to vary the difficulty of the questions, so adjust the settings to suit your child. However, try to encourage the children to attempt some harder questions and/or make it into a child vs adult challenge to see who can answer the most. The game is on!
Topic (ICT):
As we have done before in our ICT you are going to type a short message about what you have been up to and email in (with adult help) to tell us all about it. We didn’t have an ICT section last week due to the Bank Holiday and VE Day celebrations, so you have a few weeks worth of events to tell us about. Also the staff video message was posted earlier this week (on our school website homepage) so if you saw it, feel free to let us know what you thought in your own message.
For example, we were left wondering if Mrs Friend has worn anything else other than her pyjamas for the whole time and if it has been so long the picture of Mr Ward is actually with his own hair?
We received some fabulous messages last time and hope to do so again.
If you cannot email in, do not worry and perhaps get the children to write their news into a word processing program, save it and then they can even return to add to it weekly?
There are still the weekly suggested PE workouts to do if you are feeling energetic and keep up the Numbots and Reading Eggs work as well. Already we have so many certificates awarded from them to give out when we finally return to school, well done.
Hope you have a fabulous Friday and enjoy your weekend Year 1!
Also there is to be no additional homework set for over Easter so you can use your time to complete the past few weeks worth of work or complete some pages from your recent phonic sounds booklet.
Either way have a fabulous break, stay safe and look after yourselves and others.
