Year 4

Tuesday 7th July 2020

Good Morning Year 4, I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying the Sock activities.

English

Today’s lesson is all about writing your own composition, using the features of a diary and can be found here:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-write-our-own-composition-using-the-key-features-of-a-diary

Maths

The next lesson in the shape sequence is classifying quadrilaterals:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-compare-and-classify-quadrilaterals

As I’ve already mentioned, if there is another lesson in the series, that you think would benefit you more, then you are welcome to complete that instead.

Sock Olympics

Don’t forget to send me your scores, as Tesco would say, every little helps! The more points you score the better your house team will do.

Monday 6th July 2020

Good morning Year 4 and welcome to the Socks Olympic Week!

As well as setting work for English and Maths this week, there are some activities linked to the Socks Olympics – timed because this week would have been Sports Day. There are also some physical sports activities for you to complete, all you need is a pair of socks! If you send in your scores to me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) giving me your house name and score, they will be compiled and the winner announced at a later date.

English

Today’s English lesson is a focus on Spelling and Grammar – using expanded noun phrases (which you are already familiar with) and more practise using conjunctions, both in the context of a diary entry. The lesson can be found here:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/spag-focus-07a5ff

Maths

Today your lesson is on 2D shapes.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-compare-and-classify-2d-shapes

As I mentioned last week, these lessons are a recap. If you are happy with identifying them and being able to list the properties, then you can choose an alternative lesson from the Shape and Symmetry unit.

Friday 3rd July 2020

Good morning Year 4, another Friday, another week gone by – how time flies!

English

Today we are following the next lesson in the diary sequence of lessons: Features of a Diary Entry which can be found here:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-identify-the-key-features-of-a-diary/activities/3

Maths

We have now covered all of the topics from Year 4. Next week I will be posting reviews of the different topics for you to complete, but today and for the next week I thought I would pick out some of the areas that generally tend to cause a problem, because we don’t look at them as often. So today’s focus is angles, which you can find here:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/shape-and-symmetry-to-solve-problems-based-on-angles

If you want to try any of the earlier lessons in this sequence then the following page take you to the menu for shape and symmetry:

Worksheets

Thursday 2nd July 2020

Good morning Year 4.Today you will complete another reading comprehension from the Oak Academy, and the final lesson in our measures unit. Also, you have the second part in our science unit of plants, all about recording and presenting observations.

English

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/reading-comprehension-inference

Today’s lesson focus is inference. We had practised this quite a bit in class before lockdown. It is where you need to ‘read between the lines’ and work out what the author is telling you. For example if the author wrote: Jenny’s face was crumpled and tear stained. She huddled down under her blanket ,listening to the constant beat of the raindrops on the window pane, and could not face getting up for breakfast.

From these two sentences we already know quite a few things, such as:

How Jenny is feeling

What time of day it is

The author doesn’t specifically tell us this, but we can work it out from the other details.

Maths

This is the last in the measures series from the Oak Academy and I hope you have enjoyed the sessions. You should now be comfortable with the different types of measures and converting between them.

Wednesday 1st July 2020

Good morning Year 4. I hope you enjoyed the Staying Safe in the Sun activity yesterday. It turns out it was a good day to do it, because you didn’t have to miss any sunshine, as the weather seems to have turned.

English

Last week, I gave you until today to have written and edited your newspaper reports. Well done to Ansh, Millie and Saleha who have already sent theirs to me. I have really enjoyed reading them.

For today I have chosen a reading comprehension about penguins. There are 2 levels of challenge:

Level 1                                  Level 2

Maths

Today you are working with the length measure, although the starter for your work is a recap about time. The lesson can be found here:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/measures-length-flag-pole

Science

Our new topic in science is all about growing healthy plants. Some of the tasks involved in the unit ask you to experiment using some real plants. I appreciate this might be difficult for some of you, in the current situation, so I will try and add additional resources that will help you, where necessary. To make sure that we cover the whole topic, I will be posting more science lessons that normal during the week.
