Good morning Year 4, I hope you’ve had a great weekend.

Maths

Now we have completed our topic of Statistics, we are going to focus on measures for the next two weeks. We did start this in class, converting between km, cm and m, kg and g and we did some work on time. We have also done work on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 or 1000, earlier in the year. Remember this is STRICTLY!! In other words you put the original number on a place value chart and move it left to make it bigger (multiply), right to make it smaller (divide). How many places (steps), depends on whether you are multiplying/dividing by 10, 100 or 1000. You should remember the link. (clue – look at the zeros).

This set of lessons takes you through the 3 different sets of measures that you need to know: length, mass and capacity. At the end you will be asked to use the bigger > and smaller < signs to order some everyday things into size order. The link to the first lesson can be found here:

There is one comparison, that I would argue about – can you work out which one it is?

If you want to extend your learning, you can find some everyday objects in the house and (with your parent’s permission) weigh them. Also look at your recycling – find some unusually shaped containers, fill them with water and then pour this into a measuring jug to see exactly how much it holds. With both of these activities, estimate how much you think they will measure before you go on to measure it exactly. You should find that the more you do, the more accurate you become.

English

I hope you enjoyed the King of the Fishes tale that we worked on in the last Talk for Writing unit. Over the next two weeks, we will be working through another unit about Aliens. This is more of an information text, which then leads to you writing a newspaper report. You have written in the genre before – Little Red Riding Hood, so you are already familiar with the change of style necessary for a newspaper report type of text.

Today I would like you to work your way through the unit to page 4. The important thing for today, is that you understand the content of the text and the vocabulary. You can find the unit on the link below:

PSHCE

In the summer term in Year 4, we would normally learn how to cross the road safely. Obviously, with you not being in school, this is a little difficult! So, to make sure you don’t miss out we will be working through a range of activities this week with that theme.

Once you have worked your way through the video and slide show, I would like you to design a Road Safety poster for Year 2 children, incorporating what you have learned so far.

Spellings

Last week you looked at words that had the im and ill prefixes which make the root word have the opposite meaning. This week your words have the ir and in prefixes which have the same effect.
