Good Morning Year 3 and welcome to your first home learning day as year 3's.

In Maths, we have just started a unit on Multiplication and Division. Yesterday we learnt that when we multiply we need to have equal groups. Below are links to the next lesson in our sequence. There will be a video input, a true or false question and a worksheet. Depending on how confident you are feeling you should complete either the first sheet or both of the sheets.

In English we are reading lots of different poems. At this time of the year in year 3 we write a class poem about what winter means to us. Have a think about all of the things that you like to do at this time of year and write a sentence about each of them to form a list poem (a little bit like the explorer's rucksack poem that we wrote last week).

As you know we have been looking at reading, recording and beginning to predict the weather.

Following last week’s lesson on describing the weather from give scenes, you are today going to use what you’ve learnt to write a mini weather report on the weather outside of your window.

Remember to use correct terminology and also record the time of your report.

For example:

At 3:30pm on Wednesday the 25th of November 2020 in Potters Bar it is dark and gloomy with a temperature of around 13 degrees Celsius. The skies are partially cloudy with a small chance of scattered showers and a gentle breeze blows in from a North Westerly direction.

For an extension, you could go onto the Internet and select another town, city and/or country to search for the current weather there and as like above create a weather report for it.

You can type it up (if possible) or write your report on the paper that Mrs La Frenais provided for you. I look forward to reading them when we return back to school. Mr Smith

Welcoming you back to school.

Hello Year 4 – hope you’ve had a great summer and have made the most of the lovely weather we have had.

It has been great to see some of you out and about in Potters Bar, and be able to say hello, but I’m very much looking forward to welcoming you all back toLadbrooke and things getting back to normal.

I hope you could tell at our ‘picnic’, how excited I am at the thought of having you back in school to start your Year 4 learning journey. I can’t wait to get started on the Year 4 curriculum. We have some lovely stories to read together and great topics to explore.

Your parents have received a letter which details how you will come into school on Thursday and what you need to bring, but the main message is to bring your water bottle and no big rucksacks,only a book bag if you need to.

We will still be using the cloakroom for your coats and your pegs are in the same place as last year’s Year 4s. That is one bay along from where you were last year. Your pegs have all been labelled and they are in first name alphabetical order.

Unlike previous years, you were not able to have an afternoon with me in the year 4 classroom,when we would normally go through the classroom layout and where your trays would be, but in many respects it is very similar to Year 3. You each have your own drawer to put your book bag in (if you have brought one) and your water bottle will sit on the floor under your desk. In Year 4 I usually have most of the desks in row format and this is how they will be laid out on Thursday. I will put you in a space, but this may change as the term progresses.

Unlike previous years, last year I have been into Year 3 to teach you on some Wednesday mornings, so I already know you a little bit and you know me, so that is a great start. So, that’s all from me for now, let’s all be ready to learn on Thursday! See you then.

Friday 17th July

Well done year 3. You have made it! Your final day of home learning and the start of the summer holidays! I want to say a big thank you to you and to your parents for working so hard at home.

Miss Hafeez and I also want to say a very big thank you for the thoughful gifts. They are beautiful and very unexpected. It has been such a different year to the one that we were expecting and this year group will always be very special to us both. I hope that you all have a relaxing break and I am looking forward to seeing you back in school in September where things should be a little more normal. Keep checking this page because I know that Mrs Dowdall is hoping to post a message to you all.

Thursday 16th July

Only one more day to go year 3! You are doing brilliantly! Did you manage to do some tidying up on Monday? I am proud to say that I managed to sort out under my desk! I hope that you were just as succesful! Your task today is to ask a grown up at home what you can do to help them out.

If you would like something else to do, in school we have been designing our own theme park. Start by thinking of a theme and a name. Then design your own logo and think about the rides and attractions that you would like to include. We are going to draw a map of our theme park today.

Hello year 3! It was so lovely to see lots of you yesterday morning. I have missed you all so much and it was great to hear about some of the things that you have been doing. I was going to set Maths and English for today and then I thought about how hard you have all worked and so today's home learning is to watch a film. Once you have watched it, you could talk to someone about what happened and see if you can summarise the main points of the story. Happy watching!

Wednesday 8th July

Hello year 3. In school today, some of us took part in the 'Sock Olympics.' If you haven't had a go at home yet, it was a lot of fun. We did the Sock Throw, the Sock and Spoon Race, Sock Basketball, Sock Drop, Sock Throw and Sock Catch. My favourite was the Sock and Spoon Race. We have some good scores coming in already for Lincoln, Chester and York so please do email me your scores and I will add them to the sheet. The details of the games can be found below:

In Maths we are continuing with time and with the last lesson of the week on Oak National Academy.

In English, we are going to look at some reading comprehension skills on BBC Bitesize. The first option is an extract from 'Agents of the Wild' by Jennifer Bell and Alice Lickens and is the story of a young gils recruited to save endangered animals.

The second option is a series of comprehension and writing activities based on the book 'Slime' by David Walliams.

I hope that you all have a good Friday. Next week is 'Sports Week' so there will be lots of sporting activities posted on Monday (and some optional Maths and English for those of you who would like them).

Thursday 2nd July

Good morning year 3. A short update today. I hope that you are all becoming experts on telling the time. Today we are going to be telling the time to the nearest minute - looking at times to the hour.

In English, it is the second writing day of your Jungle Log. If you finished your log yesterday, you can use today to edit it carefully (or to have a well earned break).

Mrs Dowdall has another Science lesson for you too. Today’s lesson is all about muscles and how they help us to move.

Hello year 3. I can't quite believe that I am writing July! How are you all getting on with telling the time? For the past two days we have been looking at telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Monday 29th June

Hello year 3! Welcome to another Monday of home learning. As it is a Monday, keep a look out on the home page for Miss Webster's Monday morning assembly.

In Maths this week we are going to be looking at telling the time. In year 2 you learnt to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes but we will go over this again this week using the Oak Academy lessons as a base. The first lesson is below:

Telling the time is usually a tricky maths unit in year 3 but one of the best ways to learn is to keep practising at intervals throughout the day and home learning is perfect for this.

In school we make our own clock faces so that we can practise showing different times. If you would like to do this at home there is a template below:

In Maths, we are going to finish our unit on volume, capacity and mass by solving problems.

I have jumped ahead with the Oak Academy lessons as a lot of the skills on comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting we have already covered when measuring mass. In English we are going to do some art work linked to our unit on explorers. The task and a template can be found on page 10 of the booklet but if you prefer you can complete you picture on a seperate piece of paper to give yourself more space.

Thursday 25th June

Good morning year 3! I hope that you enjoyed the sunshine yesterday and didn't get too hot! I have been very impressed with the list poems that I have seen so far and I thought that I would give you a break from writing for tomorrow (or a chance to catch up if you haven't finished it yet). Instead, we are going to take a look at a lesson on the Oak National Academy that combines the Science and Topic work that we were doing in school. The lesson looks at solids, liquids and gases which we had started to look at and also the water cycle - which is something that we were moving on to. The link for the lesson is below:

Hello everybody! I hope that you are not too hot! Today's maths lesson is a recap on reading scales. Knowing what intervals a scale is going up in is something that year 3 generally find quite tricky so I though it would be good to spend a little bit more time practising before we move on. In English, we are moving on to the next section of the booklet which is to write a list poem of the ten things in an explorers rucksack. There is an example and some helpful hints on page 8 of the booklet and a planning sheet on page 9 to help you.

Monday 15th June

Hello year 3. I hope that you had a good weekend and that you were able to enjoy some sunshine after all of the rain that we had last week. All that rain however did allow some of you test out your umbrellas and hats to see if they were waterproof. I was very impressed with the standard of your STEM challenges. I will give you a break from them this week but will post some more next weekend ready for the following week.

For English this week some of you will be pleased to hear that we are going to have a break from story writing and we are going to look at writing instructions. This is something that we did in the first term of year 3. This week we are going to follow the instruction writing scheme on the Oak National Academy Week 1 for (week beginning the 20th April). Hello year 3, we have made it to the end of another week of home learning. You are all doing brilliantly and make sure that you take a moment today to say thank you to your parents for all of their hard work. Apologies for Thursday's English lesson. Tuesday 9th June

Good morning year 3.I hope that you are all well. We have almost come to the end of our English unit on story writing. Today and tomorrow we are going to work on writing our stories. There are some ideas on page 20 of the booklet to get you started and there is a must, should, could success criteria below - like the ones we use in class.

MUST - You must make sure that all of your capital letters and full stops are correct.

SHOULD - You should be using prepositional phrases like the ones that you have been practising.

COULD - You could include speech. Remember that the punctuation needs to go inside your speech marks.

Please send me copies of your stories when you have completed them and I will try and have a go at reading some of them out and posting them here. Remember, you have two days to write your stories.

In Maths we are going to continue learning about 2D shapes. Today we are going to be looking at drawing 2D shapes.

Good morning year 3! I hope that you have all been able to find enough books to read during lockdown. What has been your favourite book so far? If you have read something that you really enjoyed please let me know and I can post some recommendations on the website for everyone to see.

For English today, we are going to complete pages 14 and 15 of the booklet. This will be the last writing task for this week.

Hello year 3! Thank you to everyone who has sent in work so far this week. I have seen some great vocabulary, fantastic perpendicular lines and some very healthy dinner plates! Keep up the good work. Tomorrow in Maths we are going to look at parallel lines.

Good morning year 3! I hope that you enjoyed the sunshine yesterday and that you are now experts on identifying perpendicular lines. Today in Maths we are going to be drawing perpendicular lines. The link to the lesson is below:

In English, we are going to continue with our unit on story writing. You can work through the booklet at your own pace but if you are keeping up with me, the plan today is to reread the story and complete the 'What did you think about the story?' section and the 'Reading Quiz'. These are on pages 8 and 9 of the booklet.

Now that we are moving into our second term of home learning, I thought that I would post some Science work for those of you who are missing Science. Our topic this half term in Science is 'Animals including Humans' and we begin by looking at healthy eating.

The following clip talks about Healthy Eating and the main food groups.

There is a short film clip and then a quiz. Once you have completed this you can compile your own healthy food plate, with your favourite things. Remember to send me a copy if you are proud of it.

Monday 1st June

Hello year 3! I hope that you have all had a restful half term and that you have enjoyed the sunshine. We have spent a lot of time in the garden this week and I am very thankful for the lovely weather that we have had. However, I have missed all of your emails and seeing all of your work. From June 1st I will be back in school full time but I will keep posting work everyday and please keep sending me your work. I promise that I will reply to all of your emails but it may take me a little longer so please bear with me.

This is another of my favourite topics in year 3 as you can have a lot of fun drawing shapes with perpendicular and parallel lines. We are going to follow the Oak National Academy lessons everyday this week but we are a week behind their scedule so we will be looking at the week beginning 18th May (Week 5 on the schedule). The link to Monday's lesson is below.

In English, we are going to follow a Talk for Writing booklet on story writing. This booklet should take us roughly two weeks to complete with some Art and DT challenges along the way. The link to the booklet is below. It is set up very much in the same way as the report on trolls that we completed before half term. On the front page it asks for a donation but Ladbrooke have donated on your behalf.

On Monday, the plan is to read the background information to the story and the story 'The Stone Trolls' and the complete the section 'What do the words mean?' If you would like a challenge, try using some of the words in sentences or a short paragraph.

Good morning year 3. Not only have we made it to the end of another week but also a half term! I hope that you have enjoyed art week. I have seen some wonderful art work already but do not worry if you haven't completed it yet as next week is half term. Hello year 3! The week that you have all been waiting for has finally arrived....yes....it is ART WEEK! Here is a message from Miss Webster and Mrs Petrou to introduce it.

In school the week before May half term is always an art week and we see no reason for this to change this year.  For one week only your children will focus solely on art.  Please look at the document attached.  The children can choose to focus on one challenge or if they are feeling very arty they may attempt them all.  As it is half term next week and no work will be set during this week, they could spend two weeks on these projects.

The theme is Nature Around Us and the challenges are based on using things they may find on their walks around parks and in your gardens to create art.  We hope you will have a lot of fun.

We would then love to have a gallery of the children's work displayed on the website. If you would like send a picture of your child holding their art work and tell us what their enjoyed most about this activity, you can email this to Mrs Petrou @ ctheo@ladbrooke.herts.sch.uk

Friday 15th May

Good morning year 3! I really can't believe that it is Friday already! Today for English, I am going to give you several options. If you haven't finished your diary entry, you can use the time today to complete it and to make sure that it is the best that it can be.

If you have finished your diary and you are happy with it, there is a short bbc bitesize lesson that will show you the importance of editing and proofreading and give you some tasks to practice your skills.

The third option, is to design a device for transporting the enormous pumpkin. You can draw and label your design and if you are feeling creative you could even make a small model. Remember, you don't need to do all of the tasks but whichever one you decide to do, I would love to see it when it is finished.

For Maths we are going to complete the final angles lesson in the Oak National Academy sequence.

Wednesday 13th May

Good morning year 3! How are you all this morning? Are you enjoying the Oak National Academy lessons? My daughter did a year 5 lesson yesterday morning on timetables - it was a little tricky but very well explained so I hope you feel the same about the year 3 lessons on angles. Today we are going to be learning about recognising right angles. This is one of my favourite lessons to teach in class!

Hello year 3. I hope that you enjoyed the long weekend and that you were able to relax in the sunshine a little. As you know, I was in school last week. It was very strange being there without you all but it was lovely to talk to some of you and your families on the phone.

Good Morning year 3! As it is a bank holiday on Friday, we have come to the end of week 5. I was so impressed with the bridges that you created for your trolls last week that I have decided to celebrate the end of another week of hard work with a similiar challenge. This week, your task is to build a raft for the Billy Goats who were trying to cross the troll's bridge. Be as creative as you can but your challenge is to see if your raft will float. Wednesday 6th May

Hello all! A very short post for today as in English we are continuing with our writing. I have seen a few finished reports already and I am very impressed so if you have already completed and edited your report then you may have a day off writing. I think you have earned a rest! However, if you would like some extra reading practise there is a year 3 reading comprehension which can be found by searching for 'seeds and weeds differentiated reading comprehension activity' on Twinkl.

Please keep sending me your completed reports. I am in school this week working with the children of key workers so I may not be able to reply straight away but it does mean that I can share your work with Miss Webster and some of the other teachers and I will reply as soon as I can.

Tuesday 5th May

Good morning all! Now that we have finished planning our information text on trolls we are going to spend today and tomorrow writing our report and editing it. You can use the headings in the plan as your subheadings for each paragraph but remember to use some of the writing you have done so far to help you and look again at the example at the beginning of the booklet and borrow some sentences. I am going to set some more fun activities for the end of the week so if the writing takes you longer please don't worry.

Here is your success criteria - just like we would have if we were in school:

MUST: All of your capital letters and full stops must be correct and your sentences must make sense.

SHOULD: Use some of the adverbs that you have used in the booklet.

COULD: Use a range of conjunctions to extend your sentences - however, although, even though.

Monday 4th May

Hello year 3 and welcome to what I think is week 5 of home learning. First of all I would like to say a huge well done for the bridges that you built for your trolls. I was very impressed! If you haven't finished it, do not worry. You do not have to complete all of the work on the day that it is posted but please do send me a photo when it is complete. One of my favourite things at the moment is to see the work that you are doing at home.

English this week is going to continue with the booklet on trolls. The plan is to work on planning your report today (pages 14 and 15 of the booklet). You can either print out the plan they have provided or draw your own in your workbook. This is the way that we plan all of our writing in class so it should be very familiar. Remember, in the box labelled new ideas you are writing down the points that you will include in that paragraph. You don't need to include all of the details that you will put in your final report. Also, remember to use what you have already written so far in this unit to help you. You are the expert so you can make up the details for yourselves!

On Tuesday and Wednesday the plan is to write and edit your reports. I was so impressed with your bridges that I have another fun challenge planned for the end of the week!

In Maths this week we are going to recap our learning on money. We are going to begin by converting pounds and pence on bbc bitesize daily lessons.

If you have completed these and would like a further challenge please find a link to some problems that you can solve. These come in 3 levels of challenge. Remember, you only need to complete one challenge and you don't need to finish the whole sheet. Some of these are tricky.

Friday 1st May

Good morning year 3! I can't quite believe that it is the 1st of May today and we are coming to the end of our fourth week of learning from home. In order to celebrate we are going to learn a little differently today. Today's task is to build a bridge underneath which your troll can live. You may use anything that you want to build your bridge. It could be recycled boxes or lego or you could try and build it from 10 pieces of recycled paper and tape - like we have done in class. There is an information pack on Twinkl to give you some ideas if you need them. If you would like to take a look search for 'Billy Goats Bridge Building STEM Activity and resource Pack.

Thursday 30th April

Hello year 3. I saw some great use of adverbs yesterday. Well done! Today we are going to continue with our work on trolls and we are going to look at pages 12 and 13 of the booklet. We are going to use adverbs open our sentences and we are going to have a go at using relative clauses beginning with who. Use the example in the booklet to help you and do not worry if you find them tricky. We will go over them again.

In Maths we are going to continue with the daily bitesize lessons with a combination of addition and subtraction problems. How have you been finding the bitesize lessons? Please let me know.

I have noticed this week that the sunshine has disappeared and I have looked out of the window a few times and thought that it would be wet play if we were at school. I know how much many of you love to colour in during wet play so I have been looking for some sheets for you. If you search for 'Mindfulness Colouring' on Twinkl there are lots!

Hello Year 3! I hope you are all awake and ready to learn. I saw some fantastic trolls yesterday with some great description. Well done! Today in English we are going to continue to look at writing about our trolls. Today you will be experts so you can choose some of the facts for yourselves. You are also going to use adverbs to help add extra information to your sentences. The activities will be found on pages 10 and 11 of the booklet.

For Maths we are going to continue with the bbc bitesize lessons for this week. Today's lesson is on efficient addition and subtraction methods. This is something that we have worked on a little in class but it is something that I was planning to come back to. Tuesday 28th April

Good morning year 3. I hope that you are all doing okay and that you enjoyed reading about trolls yesterday. This week and the beginning of next week we are going to continue to work through the booklet. Each day I will signpost you to a different activity but you can also work at your own pace so if you miss a day you can always catch up later.

Hello year 3! I can't quite believe that it is the beginning of another week. I hope that you had a restful weekend and that you have been able to enjoy the sunshine.

In English we are going to work through a talk for writing booklet. We use a talk for writing approach in our writing in class so it shouldn't be too different to what you are used to. The booklet that we are going to use can be found by clicking on the link below and clicking on the 'Year 3 Unit' where you will join Professor Folklore in finding the truth about trolls.

Tomorrow's task is to read the report 'The Truth about Trolls.' Once you have read it, I would like you to complete the 'What do the words mean?' sheet. You can either print the sheet off or write the words and their definitions in your workbook. If you would like an extra challenge you could use of the words in a sentence or even a paragraph.

For maths this week we are going to recap on some of the learning that we did in class at the beginning of the year and we are going to start with the formal written method for addition. Today's lesson can be found below

If you would like an extra challenge, you could write some addition word problems. You could use 3 or 4 digit numbers and even decimals or money - as long as you are sure that you can work out the answer. If you do complete the challenge and your parents are happy for you to send me an email, send me one of your real life problems and I will see if my daughter can solve it (she is in year 5 so they can be a little bit tricky!)

Friday 24th April

Well done year 3! You have done a fantastic job of writing a dialogue between two of the characters in the story. If your dialogue included a title, a scene number and some stage directions in brackets telling the characters what they need to do then today's task is to edit your playscript carefully. Check for capaital letters, full stops and question marks and see if there are any other improvements that you could make.

If you have a short piece of dialogue from yesterday then today's task is to put it into a playscript. I have attached an example below to help you.

In Maths, we are going to look at adding lengths. There is a teaching pack on Twinkl which you should be able to find if you search for 'Year 3 Add lengths teaching Pack' if you cannot locate it, please send an me email to let me know.

Hello year 3. I hope that you are all well.

I hope that you enjoyed 'Into the Forest' yesterday. It is one of my favourite picture books. For today's English work, I would like you to choose one of the characters that the boy meets in the forest (Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks or Hansel and Gretal) and think about what they say when they meet the boy. Next, in your workbook, start to write down their dialogue (what they say) using the example below to help you.

Boy:        Hello! I didn't see you there in the dark. Who are you?

Hansel:   Hello! Have you seen our dad and mum?

Boy:        No! What are you doing alone in the forest? Have you lost them?

Gretal:     Yes! They are cutting wood in the forest somewhere but I do wish that they would come back.

You can use the conversations in the book to help you and you can add to it if you wish.

Yesterday's maths was quite tricky so there are two options available today. If you were able to convert between cm and m confidently then there is a link below to try converting mm and cm. Remember there are 10mm in a cm.

Mrs Romain has been at school this week and has updated the TT Rockstars leader board so you could also use this time to go on TT Rockstars. We now have quite a few year 3's on the board which is fantastic. Well done year 3!

Wednesday 22nd April

Hello year 3! I hope that you are getting back into the swing of homelearning. In English, you should now have a list of the features of a play script. Today we are going to look at a story that we will use to help us write our own play script later in the week. The story is 'Into the Forest' by Anthony Browne which some of you may be familiar with. You can find the story online by following the link below but please ask your parents first.

If you are unable to watch the clip, do not worry, simply use a picture book that you have at home or find a fairy tale on Twinkl that you like and use this story instead.

Today's task is to write a book review of Into the Forest (or your chosen book). Please include the title, author, a short summary of the book (we have written summaries in class so remember to stick to the main points of the story) something that you really liked about the book, something that you think could be improved upon and what audience you would recommend it for. If you would like to, you can include an illustration and a five star rating and as always, if you are proud of your work please do send me a copy as I would love to read some of them.

In Maths, we are moving on to look at cm and m. You should already know that there 100 cm. in a m. so 153cm would be 1m and 53cm and 3m 56cm would be 356cm.

There are three challenges below. You only need to complete one of the challenges from the fluency section but if you are unsure, start at D and when you are more confident move onto E or even GD. After you have completed a fluency sheet you can have a go at some of the problem solving examples. Some of these are quite tricky so please do not worry if you only do a couple.

Tuesday 21st April

Good morning year 3!

I hope that you enjoyed performing the playscripts yesterday. Today we are going to look at the features of a playscript. Start by making a list of the features that you found yesterday. Then, using the powerpoint on Twinkl 'LKS2 Features of a Play Script Power Point,' see what other features you can add to your list. Your task today is to annotate the features on an example of a play script. The sheets can be found by searching for 'Recognising the Features of a Play Script: The Little Red Riding Hood Collection Differentiated Worksheet.' I think that you should hopefully be able to complete challenge 3 but I have attached all 3 challenges below.

Identifying the Features

For maths we are going to continue to look at measuring perimeters so if you didn't finish all of the work for yesterday you will have a chance to complete it today. If you are ready to move on, your task today is to draw a selection of 2D shapes and then measure the perimeter of each shape. Challenge 1 is to draw and measure them to the nearest cm. Challenge 2 is to draw and measure them to the nearest half cm and Challenge 3 is to draw and measure to the nearest mm. That means that one side of your shape could be 7.3cm long. Remember if you choose challenges 2 or 3, when you add up the sides you will need to add using decimals - we have done this in class when we added money - but don't forget to use a written method and make sure that you put your numbers in the correct place value column. Welcome back Year 3!

I hope that you are all well rested and ready to learn. I have really missed seeing your work these past two weeks and hearing about how you are getting on so, if your parents are willing for you to do so, please send me a short email letting me know how you are doing and what you did in these very strange holidays. Is there something new that you have learnt to do? My two girls learnt how to play Scrabble last week and as a result part of their home learning next week is going to be working on spelling - which they are not very happy about!

Before the Easter holidays, I said that we are going to be writing playscripts next. The first thing that I would like you to do is think about where you have seen a playscript before (Hint: think about our class assembly last term. Can you remember your lines?). Next, I would like you to have a look at some playscripts on Twinkl and read them aloud. Hopefully someone will be able to help you out by reading some of the parts for you. If not, try reading them using different voices. As you read them, think about what features they have in common.

Both playscripts can be found on Twinkl. The first can be found by searching for 'Playscripts Gingerbread Man' and the second 'Playscripts Little Red Riding Hood.' For the Little Red Riding Hood one, it is the actual playscript that you need and not the recognising the features pack as we will look at this later in the week. If you would like a little bit more of a challenge, searching for playscripts on Twinkl will bring up other examples for different year groups which you could also read and perform.

As a reading challenge this week, I would like you to search on Twinkl for Captain Tom Moore and there is a reading comprehension task labelled ages 7-9 that I would like you to complete before the end of the week if you can.

In Maths, we are going to continue looking at measuring length. We are going to start with a recap of what we did before the holidays. A good powerpoint for doing this can be found on Twinkl by searching 'PlanIt Maths Y3 Measurement Lesson Pack Length (1) There are some good resources here as well if you would like some more practise with estimating and measuring.

When you are ready, please move onto calculating the perimeter of shapes. We have introduced perimeter very briefly in class as the distance around the outside of the shape. There is a powerpoint explaining it in more detail and examples for you to complete with three levels of challenge to be found by searching for 'Year 3 Diving into Mastery: Measure Perimeter Teaching Pack' on Twinkl.'

Friday 3rd April

Hello Year 3! Today is Friday and marks the end of our week on fairy tales. Today's fairy tale is 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' and as with the other tales there is a version to be found on Twinkl in the form of an e book and a powerpoint. Your task for today is to tell the story in your own way. You may choose to paint a picture and write some sentences, to create a cartoon strip, a story board, a poem, a letter or a diary entry or another way of your choice. I have been so impressed with your work so far and I am looking forward to seeing how creative you can be. After the Easter holidays, when I resume setting work on Monday 20th April we will see all of the characters we have met this week in our book 'Into the Forest' by Anthony Brown and we will use this story to begin to write playscripts.

The maths work today will continue to look at measuring length and there are three challenges below.

Good Morning Year 3!

Here are some examples from your diary entries. Can you work out which characters they were written by?

'...Anyway, his house was quite nice, but wait until I tell them my secret profession as a mascot of a certain football club. The chairman will be delighted with my new egg laying skill!'

'....We live in a cottage and we are very poor. I'm so sad that I can't give my boy all the things which he deserves.'

'.....The next thing I know, Jack was tying a rope around my neck and taking me out to the path to the market. I hate the market because it is crowded and noisy.'

'....My wish came true, last night a boy climbed up a magic beanstalk and broke into the castle.'

In English today we are going to look at the tale of Little Red Riding Hood. There is an example of the story on Twinkl if you search for 'Little Red Riding Hood Powerpoint' but I am sure that you are all familiar with the story. For today, I would like you to write a setting description. We have done several of these in class - making sure that we include our senses and how it makes us feel. The setting that I would like you to describe is the forest that Little Red Riding Hood walks through on her way to her grandmother's house. Try and see if you can start some of your sentences in different ways. For example - out of nowhere, in the distance, the sound of ..... filled the air.

In Maths we are going to begin measuring length in cm and mm. There is a fun game on Twinkl to get you started which is called the KS1 Measuring Objects Game. Can you come up with some other examples yourself?

Next, we will look at measuring objects around the house. Today's task is to create a table with three columns. The first column should be labelled 'object', the second 'estimated length' and the third 'actual length.' How many objects around your home can you estimate and measure? Remember to measure to the nearest mm using decimals e.g.   7.3cm which would be 7cm and 3mm. Also, remember to record your estimate (the length that you think it will be) before you measure the length of the object.

Good Morning Year 3!

Thank you for your diary entries. I am still reading them and trying to work out which characters you have written as. Tomorrow, I will post some examples so that you can see if you can work them out for yourselves - some of them are quite tricky!

For English today we are going to revisit a and an as I have noticed that some of you are making a few mistakes with these. If you go on to Twinkl and search for 'Year 3 Grammar: Using A or An Learning from Home Activity Booklet' there will be several activities for you to complete. We looked at using A and An at the beginning of the school year so hopefully you won't find it too tricky. Just remember that it is the vowel sound that you are thinking about not just the letter.

In Maths we are coming to the end of our topic on fractions so today we are going to be looking at using fractions to solve problems. If you go to Twinkl and search 'Year 3 Fraction Problems Worksheet' there sould be some examples of fraction problems for you to solve. If you would like a challenge you can write some problems of your own for your family to solve. When we come to the end of a topic in class we usually complete a short assessment. If you would like to do this at home you will find one on Twinkl 'Year 3 Maths Assessment: Fractions Term 2.'

Hello Year 3. I hope that you are all wide awake and ready to learn!

I was very pleased to see some of your work on Hansel and Gretel today. There were some very creative examples so well done all.

Today's fairy tale is going to be Jack and the Beanstalk. I know that you are all familiar with the story but just to refresh your memories, there is a powerpoint and an e book on Twinkl which should appear if you search for Jack and the Beanstalk. Once you have reminded yourselves of the story, today's task is to write a diary entry from one of the characters. Remember our feature list from the classroom and try to include how the character is feeling and also something secret. You may choose whose diary you wish to write but you must use the following success criteria:

MUST: Make sure that all of your capital letters and full stops are correct.

SHOULD: Include 3 paragraphs.

If you are able to send me some of your diary entries I will try and publish some of the feelings and secrets tomorrow and you can see if you can work out who the character is.

In Maths we are going to look at comparing fractions. There are two tasks available today. The first is slightly more straightforward and can be found on Twinkl if you search for year 3 fractions. The first page to hopefully appear is called Fractions and Ordering. The second challenge is a little trickier and you should find the link below. Remember, the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction.

Good Morning Year 3.

How many of you are going to be starting your day with PE with Joe Wicks? I am going to give it a try this week so if you are going to be doing it too please let me know how you get on.

In English this week we are going to be looking at Fairy Tales. We are going to start the week with Hansel and Gretel. There are many different versions of the story but we are going to begin by looking at a powerpoint of the story on Twinkl. If you search for Hansel and Gretel it should be one of the first items to come up. Once you have read the story, please complete a storyboard of the tale - just like we do in class. You can either fold a sheet of A4 paper into eight sections or you can use a double page spread in the workbook you took home. Either way, remember to include the main points of the story and at least two sentences to go with each picture. Twinkl also has a reading comprehension on Hansel and Gretel with three levels of challenge that I would like you to complete before the end of the week. Please search for 'Hansel and Gretal Reading Comprehension' and it should give you a KS1 option and another option. Please complete the one that is not for KS1.

Friday 27th March

Hello Year 3, I can't quite believe that we have come to the end of our first week of home learning. I have learnt quite a lot this week and I am pleased to say that I can now upload your work to the website much more quickly than I could do Monday morning! However, perhaps the most important thing that I have learnt this week is how much I enjoy reading your work  so thank you for sending in examples of your poems.

I have loved reading all of your poems and as promised, here are some of the lines that especially impressed me. Can you find one of yours below?

If I had wings I would touch the leaves on the trees.

If I had wings I would smell the springtime flowers hiding in the tall green grass.

For English tomorrow we are going to focus on grammar.

You will find a powerpoint on the prefixes dis, mis and un on the Twinkl website if you go to planning, planIt SPaG year 3 and the unit on the prefixes dis, mis and un. There will be activities to complete on the powerpoint and then a sheet titled prefix sort with three levels of challenge which you should find below.

For maths we are going to move onto adding and fractions with the same denominators. Again a powerpoint can be found on Twinkl in planning, Year 3 Maths, Fractions in the section titled 'Adding and Subtracting fractions with the same denominator within one whole' (1) I have attached the resource sheet below. Please try and complete at least a couple of examples from challenge 1 or 2 where you have to shade in the examples before you move onto challenge 3.

Good Morning Year 3! I hope that you are wide awake and ready to learn! Thank you to everyone who has sent me an email telling me about your favourite poems - they have really cheered me up!

Madame Elena also says 'bonjour' and has sent a French activity sheet for you. You can complete it in your workbooks and we can share them with Madame Elena when we are back in school.

In English today we are going to have a go at writing our own poems. I have chosen the poem 'If I Had Wings' by Pie Corbett to use as our starting point. I chose this poem because the poet uses his senses and this is something that we have been doing in our story settings. You will find a copy of the original poem below along with guidelines on how to go about adapting it to create one of your own. Remember to use adventurous language! If you would like to send me your poems I would love to read them and may even chose the most adventurous descriptions to put up on the website for Friday.

Equivalent Fractions

In Maths we are going to start looking at telling the time soon, so any practise that you can do with this will help you over the next couple of weeks.

Wednesday 25th March

Hello year 3. I hope that you are all doing well and that you managed to access the work on Twinkl yesterday. Today in maths we are going to look at equivalent fractions - fractions that are equal to one another. In class we have looked at 2/4 and 5/10 being equivalent to a half. Today we are going to look for lots more examples using a fraction wall to help us. A power point and examples of the fraction wall can be found on Twinkl. If you go to Planning and then Twinkl PlanIt, maths Y3, fractions, there will be a section titled 'Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominators (1). I have also posted a link to the sheet you will need below. If you have a dice you can use it to help you but if not, just spot the equivalent fractions and shade them in.

In English, we are going to be looking at poems and towards the end of next week we will have a go at writing our own poems. Your task for today is to find a poem (or two) that you really like and perform it to someone at home. If your parents are happy for you to do so, you can always send me an email telling me what your favourite poem is and why you like it.

Tuesday 24th March

Good morning year 3. I hope that you are all safe and well. I am missing you lots but I am sure that you are working hard at home.

For maths today, I would like you to look at fractions of amounts. We have covered these in class a little but a powerpoint to help you can be found on the Twinkl website if you go to PlanIt Maths, Year 3 fractions. The pack is called 'Recognise Fractions of a set of objects' (2) and there are a set of worksheets called 'Would you Rather' with 3 levels of challenge and the answers - for you parents! Twinkl can be accessed using the UKTWINKLHELPS code.

For English today I would like you to check through your diary entry from yesterday. Please edit it carefully for capital letters, full stops, conjunctions and adventurous vocabulary - making sure that every sentence is the best that it can be. If you are especially proud of your diary entry you can ask someone at home to take a photo of it and email it to me - I would love to read some of them!

If you have completed this and would like a further challenge please draw a picture of Starjik in your exercise book and write descriptive sentences or phrases around him. Ch 1 is 6 sentences, Ch2 is 8 and Ch3 is to include a metaphor or simile.

Monday 23rd March

Counting in tenths

Good morning year 3. Please find above a link to the maths home learning task for today. It is on counting in tenths which we have practised lots in school. If you would like an additional challenge, try counting backwards from a whole number in smaller fractions - like we did on the playground last week.

Your English task for today is to write a diary entry. In class we were preparing to write Ivan's diary as he meets the children in the village. If you can remember the details of the story please write Ivan's diary. I have included a link to the wagoll that we used in class below. If you can't remember all of the details you may choose a character from a story that you are very familiar with and write a diary for them.

You MUST make sure that all of your capital letters and full stops are correct. You SHOULD use a range of conjunctions (but, because, when, although, meanwhile) and you COULD use fronted adverbials.
